Brother MFC-J6510DW and MFC-J6710DW A3 Printers Review
MFC-J6710DE Printer Review

Brother have been first to introduce fairly low cost multi-function A3 printers. The MFC-J6510DW and MFC-J6710 DW are the latest of these offerings, with A3 printing, A3 scanning, and A3 faxing!

The reason behind our decision to write one review for two almost identical machine was because the only difference between the two models is that the the MFC-J6710DW has two paper trays instead of one. The paper tray(s) holds approximately 250 sheets (depending on the thickness of paper). In addition, both models have a convenient manual feed slot on the back of the machines for envelopes and thick media. Very useful for printing addresses on envelopes and avoiding paper jams!

The front facia of the machine has a USB port and slots for memory cards. You can load images from these ports and view them on the large LCD screen before printing them

The auto document feeder on the top of the machine holds up to 35 sheets. This is used when sending faxes with more than one sheet, and scanning / copying multiple copies at once. Scan functionality includes scan to file, email, memory card, or OCR in Windows.

Not just a machine for the small office, this printer can produce borderless photographs. You need to use Vivid mode sometimes however as colours can look dilluted in normal mode. There are plenty of settings available to tweak the output to your liking. However if you are a keen photographer you may be disapointed with the final results as they do not compare well against a dedicated photo printer.

A useful feature could be the automatic duplexer for two sided A3 prints. Like other printers, this feature can be slow as the printer has to wait for the ink to dry on one side first.

Printing costs are low with this machine as compatible and refillable LC-1220 / LC-1240 / LC-1280 cartridges which are already available. Together with the numerous features it provides in A3, wireless connectivity, and good print quality, the J6510DE and J6710DW become worthy contenders for your small office desk space.

These printers are let down by their higher prices compared to older models. They have large desk footprints (to be expected on A3 printers), and paper jam problems when not enough care has been taken loading the paper trays. Otherwise this printer would score between Great and Good.

If you are serious about buying this machine we would recommend you first take a look at the older models that are still available such as the MFC-5890CN, DCP-6690CW, and MFC-6890CDW.
