HP Officejet 6500 / 6500A Plus e-All-In-One Wireless Printer Review

The HP Officejet 6500 / 6500A Plus printer is now on sale for below £100 and offers wireless with network support, duplex printing, automatic document feeder, fax, and access to HP's ePrint service.

The large HP printer case is finished in a gloss black finish that looks a little cheap and easily picks up fingerprints. The Officejet front panel features a 6cm touch screen panel and a keypad with function buttons surrounding it. These buttons only light up when a particular feature is available or valid. The top of the printer features a 4800dpi quality scanner, and above this a 35 sheet capacity automatic document feeder (ADF). A 250 sheet capacity paper tray slots in to the front of the printer and printed paper comes out on top of the paper tray. To the front left of the 6500A printer are the memory card slots.

Print speeds are ok with the HP Officejet 6500 / 6500A Plus printer; for example an A4 text and graphics sheet printed at almost 5ppm. It is important to mention however that the start up time can take up to twenty seconds! Duplex printing is slow, but this is to be expected with most printers because the Ink has to dry on one side before the same sheet can be passed through the printer again.

Overall print quality is good, but there are slight differences between a master sheet and copy. Copied text seems to be thicker, while some images suffered from inconsistent patterns, however nothing too serious to worry about.

The HP Officejet 6500 uses a set of four HP 920 or larger capacity HP920 XL ink cartridges which are available for around £50. Cheaper compatible versions are available but do not contain a chip. You are required to remove and apply the original HP chip to the compatible cartridge. Another option is to refill the genuine HP cartridge. In both cases the Ink monitor level will read low or empty but will allow you to continue printing.

This easy to use HP Officejet 6500A Plus printer offers many features and produces good quality print in decent time. Apart from the cheap styling, large footprint and missing PictBridge USB port, the 6500 provides a good solution to the majority of office printing needs. Running costs may be a little high using genuine HP cartridges; however compatible versions are available without a chip. Original HP 920 and 920 XL cartridges can also be refilled making the printer cheap to run.
