Canon Pixma MG6350 Printer Review
The new Canon Pixma MG6350 printer looks to carry on the baton from the older and successful MG6150 and MG6250 models. Similar to the cheaper MG5450 model, Canon have changed the design of the case available in black or white, making it more streamlined and pleasing to the eye. We now need to investigate what other changes and improvements have been made since those earlier models.
The important question we need to ask ourselves is, what features and benefits justify spending that little bit extra on this model compared to the cheaper MG5450? To begin with you get an Intelligent Touch 8.8cm LCD touch screen operation, rather than having to press conventional navigation buttons. The MG 6350 also uses an extra Grey cartridge meaning that black and white prints will not use the colour cartridges. This is designed to eliminate any hue effect and produce more natural images. Printing speeds are also slightly increased with this model.
A notable emision is the lack of PictBridge port, however Canon have more than compensated to its loss. This Pixma offers AirPrint and Pixma Cloud Print. The AirPrint application is used to connect to Apple and Android mobile devices. You can print photographs, emails, and documents from your mobile smart phone or iPad. Canon Pixma Cloud Print allows you to print from anywhere in the World providing you have an Internet connection. You can also connect to a PC or Mac using an old fashioned USB cable.
Memory card ports are located to the left at the front and support SD, Micro SD, SDHC, Memory Stick Pro Duo etc. Simply insert your card and view your photographs on the generous screen, then select which ones you wish to print.
Canon printers usually offer superior print quality due to the advanced printhead technology employed. The Canon Pixma MG6350 model is no exception and has a print head with minimum pitch of 1pl and a print resolution of 9600dpi, meaning it can produce high quality photos as well as providing an outlet for office documents.
Two separate paper trays means you can use one of them for say standard A4 paper and another for specialist photo media. The bottom paper cassette best lends itself to feeding ordinary A4 or thinner paper because of the circular journey back out to the front of the printer. Thicker paper and card can offer a resistance and get jammed, so Canon offer an additional rear paper feed which, ideal for thicker paper media types (up to 300gm depending on the surface).
Results are impressive with the 2400x4800 CIS flatbed scanner which takes around 14 seconds to perform an A4 scan. Also impressive are the features associated with it. The provided software allows you to document scan, scan to PC, email, cloud, and memory card. There is also an auto scan mode with PDF creation feature. Using AirPrint you can scan and save a file to your mobile device!
The trigger or driving force behind many sales of this type of machine is its ability to print directly on to CD or DVD printable disks. Included in the box is a plastic tray which holds the disk. You then slide this into the groove in the front of the printer fascia and line it up with the arrows. By loading the CD print utility on your PC or Mac you can upload and drop images into the printable area and click print. The MG5450 then sprays ink onto the disks surface producing a professional finish.
Canon list money saving features which include double sided printing, auto power on/off, and the option of using separate and XL ink tanks. In the short term we disagree that the ink tanks will save money. This printer uses a new cartridge series called PGI-550PGBK Pigment Black, CLI-551 Black, CLI-551 Cyan, CLI-551 Magenta, and CLI-551 Yellow. There is also a more expensive XL version available which contain more than twice the capacity of ink inside. Until compatible or refillable versions become available in a few months, the MG6350 printer may be slightly expensive to run.
In summary the Canon Pixma MG6350 printer is feature rich and cosmetically pleasing, available in an attractive black or white case. Print and scan quality is good; although no better than older models still available. We think that this model could be an award winner in the future when the initial purchase price is reduced and compatible consumables become available. In the mean time look out for cash back deals.
