Canon Pixma MG6150 Printer Review

To perform well in all areas modern Inkjet printers have to be extremely versatile. Not just content with printing excellent photographs, Canon wanted to produce a machine also capable of multi-function small office tasks. With the MG6150 they have achieved this and in addition added a sixth dye grey cartridge for black and white photo printing!

This feature rich wireless (infrared) printer finished in gloss black has a central control touch panel ring on the lid which illuminates when certain functions are active. The 75mm LCD colour screen sits flush above this. By pressing a bar it can be angled forward as desired. Below this is a 4800 x 4800 dpi scanner.

The front panel pulls down and then acts as a paper tray, exposing the cd / dvd printing slot where you insert the disc tray. You can then see the memory card slots to the front right for various media types including CF. Below this are sockets for USB and ethernet connections.

Very nice to have two paper trays; at the bottom there is a 150 page paper tray, and in addition a paper tray to the rear with the same 150 sheet capacity. The rear paper tray can be best used for thicker media that may struggle to bend around bottom feeding trays.

The Pixma MG6150 uses a similar print engine to the Pixma MP990 with a very high resolution of 9600dpi. but with the added grey ink. This produces very high quality photographic work and crisp text on documents. Print speeds are good with 8 to 10 pages per minute for text, 6 pages per minute for text and graphics. Duplex printing is very slow but this is because the printer has to wait for one side to dry before printing on the reverse.

The MG6150 has no fax facility and scanning does not quite compare with some HP machines. A touch screen LCD similar to some Lexmark printers would have been nice also, but the MG6150 has the next best thing with a touch panel control.

This is the best A4 mult-function machine below £150 capable of printing top quality photographs with low running costs (compatible and refillable cartridges are available). Black and white prints are the best we have seen from an A4 printer!
