Canon Pixma MG2250 Printer Review
Canon Pixma MG2250

With the recent release of the new Canon Pixma MG models comes the cheapest of the bunch, the MG2250 All-in-one printer. Regardless of the fact that this is the cheapest printer in the range, it does still offer a printing, copying, and scanning solution inside an attractive matt plastic coated box.

To be fair to Canon they usually produce decent printing machines, and several models in particular win our awards for best quality and value. The Canon Pixma MG2250 offers reduced quality but at a much cut-down price. You can associate it with a pay as you go culture having a cheap initial purchase price for the hardware, but using slightly expensive replacement cartridges. Of course the manufacturer has to recover some funds to aid future investment into new technology! In particular their printhead technology beats many of it's rivals. In this case the printhead is built-on to each replacement cartridge, meaning you get a new one each time, however this does increase replacement costs considerably. They allow high resolution printing of up to 4800dpi, and in conjunction with the 1200x2400dpi scanner it should be possible to produce high quality copes; sadly we were slightly disapointed with the overall results.

This is the model that you will most likely see in your local supermarket, priced extremely competively for impulse purchases. Buyers be aware, the replacement ink will costs as much as the printer! The MG 2250 has a stripped down specification from the more expensive MG3250 and MG4250 which use the same printhead ink cartridges (PG-540 Black CL-541 Colour). There is no Wi-Fi Wireless connections, no memory card or USB ports, and slower print speeds. However this model is more than adequate for most modest home users for printing the occassional letter or bill. Let's be honest, in some homes printers gather dust for several months and then only get turned on when completely necessary! If this sounds like your home then maybe the MG2250 is worth a punt for £35!
